Dinagat Islands is the youngest province of the Republic of the Philippines. Used to be the First Legislative District of the Province Surigao del Norte, it was made into a separate province on December 2, 2006 by virtue of Republic Act No. 9355. But controversies and legal issues hounded the law creating the newest province. The charter was authored by the incumbent Governor Glenda Ecleo who represented the then first district. The Supreme Court voided the province’s charter on February 11, 2010. But it regained its provincehood on March 30, 2011.

They said that the Province of Dinagat Islands was the promise of Ruben Ecleo, Sr., the gift of Ruben Jr., and the legacy of Glenda. The late Ruben Sr. was the founder of the cult organization Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association or PBMA.

The Capitol is located in one of the hills in San Jose.
