Location: Brgy. Cathedral, Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte
Type: Block ledge

It had been raining during the first five days of my ten-day Mindanao backpacking trip. And because of that, I have not actually maximized my trip and some activities had to be rescheduled and condensed to accommodate them.

As I left my 3-day stay in Pagadian City, I was hoping the weather would become great. I had two waterfalls and a provincial capitol to visit that day.

Cathedral Falls in Kapatagan, Lanao del NorteWhen I arrived at Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte, the sky was gloomy and it was drizzling. As soon as I left the town center on board a habal habal motorcyle, it began to rain real hard. I was already soaking in wet midway going to Barangay Cathedral. Good thing there were cottages to provide me shelter.

On that day, Cathedral Falls was mightily roaring as huge volume of water dropped to the wide basin. Like in my visit to Pulacan Falls in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur the day before, I had Cathedral Falls all by myself. As I stand before the Cathedral Falls amidst the torrential rains, I was simple captivated by its sheer power and beauty.

And as I noticed that the rain won’t stop, I decided to go back to Kapatagan town center. The heavy rain really ruined my trip to Cathedral Falls. And it was time go. I secured all my belongings and gadgets inside two huge plastic bags so they won’t get wet.

Cathedral Falls in Kapatagan, Lanao del NorteAlthough this was by far the worst experience I ever had in my Chasing Waterfalls Project, nevertheless, the few precious moments as I came face to face with Cathedral Falls balanced it out. Maybe I should go back to Kapatagan and to Cathedral Falls and at the same time, visit Sta. Cruz Falls.

Going to Cathedral Falls is quite easy. Just take a Rural bus going to Pagadian (from Iligan) or to Iligan (from Pagadian) and drop off at Kapatagan Town Center. From there, hire a habal habal motorcycle to bring you to Cathedral Falls. A contracted fare of P50 for a round-trip ride is already a great deal.

Note: This is part of LegendHarry‘s ambitious travel project: Chasing Philippine Waterfalls. Also, this is part of his October 1-10, 2013 Zamboanga Peninsula-Northern Mindanao-ARMM-Davao Regions Backpacking Trip.
