It has been 45 years since President Ferdinand E. Marcos declared Martial Law by virtue of Proclamation No. 1081. And here are 45 of the many reasons why we should #NeverForget and it should #NeverAgain:

  1. Mountains and hills were leveled off to build the Magat Dam, the first multi-purpose hydroelectric dam in Southeast Asia. It was opened in 1982 and the power generating capacity is at least 300 MW. It spurred the growth of agricultural economy of the Province of Isabela and the rest of the Cagayan Valley Region.
  2. Countless corrals were destroyed when San Juanico Bridge was built connecting the islands of Leyte and Samar. Of course, the livelihood of boat operators in these islands was severely affected.
  3. Agricultural lands were sacrificed when Manila North Diversion and Manila South Diversion Roads (NLEX and SLEX today, respectively) were built. They are now privately operated.
  4. More lands were sacrificed just to establish state colleges and universities such as Isabela State U, Cagayan State U, Quirino State U, MMSU.
  5. And then more lands were used to build BLISS housing sites.
  6. And more prime lots were used to build the Philippine Heart Center, the National Kidney Institute, the Philippine Children’s Medical Center.
  7. The Cities of Manila and Pasay were defaced because of the construction of a mass railway system called LRT Line 1.
  8. Senator Benigno Aquino would not have been killed if Terminal 1 was not built.
  9. Manila Bay would not have been obstructed had the CCP Complex was not built.
  10. The Filipinos should not be worrying about power rate hikes had Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant and other power plants were not built.
  11. No power hike issues if only the National Electrification Administration was abolished then.
  12. Metro Manila could have more malls and condos back then had Fort Bonifacio was sold as early as the 70’s.
  13. No more colonial mentality if Klim, Nutribun, Bulgur were not distributed to the common tao.
  14. The Philippine Airlines (PAL) might have been better a better corporation and public utility if Marcos did not nationalize it.
  15. Oil prices should have been a lot higher then if Petron was sold during the Marcos dictatorship.
  16. Is it too bad that the CPP/NPA failed in their revolution, we are not a communist state?
  17. Because we are not a communist state, we have too many holidays.
  18. Because of Masagana99, we had a national food survival program.
  19. Because there was the Food Terminal Complex, there was an asset sold to the Ayalas. where condominiums and other establishments will be built upon.
  20. Because of the Pan Philippine Highway System/Asian Highway System (AH26), value of property holdings, real estate taxes and roads rights of way increased.
  21. We had Gintong Alay sports program.
  22. We have PD 825 but who follows it?
  23. PD No. 2 should be declared unconstitutional; it is anti feudalism.
  24. We should have been importing more grains if the National Grains Authority (NGA) / National Food Authority (NFA) was not formed.
  25. The Philippine National Bank (PNB) would not have been sold to Chinese taipan Lucio Tan if the government did not infuse capital.
  26. We could be eating more botcha if the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) was not established.
  27. We could not producing oil and natural gas if PD No. 8 was not enacted.
  28. Labor disputes would have been lessened if the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) was not organized.
  29. We should have saved more public funds if North Cotabato was not further subdivided thereby creating the provinces of Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao.
  30. There could not have been Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary.
  31. Nayong Pilipino was a premier tourist destination in Metro Manila.
  32. Marcos gave full and complete autonomy of the University of the Philippines – Los Banos.
  33. Without the 13th Month Pay Law, there would have been more income to the employers.
  34. Marcos implemented an anti-malaria program.
  35. PD78 created the weather bureau, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA); Amado Pineda became a household name.
  36. Tax amnesties should not have been implemented; but the Dictator did.
  37. AFP Commissary and PX Stores were created for the benefit of the men in uniform and their families.
  38. Cement were exported. The Philippines should be importing instead.
  39. Kalantiaw Shrine should not have been established.
  40. If the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) was not organized, would Mareng Winnie be a pasaway?
  41. There could not have been Civil Service exam if the CSC Law was not issued.
  42. The Republic of the Philippines accepted and assisted Vietnamese refugees during the Vietnam War.
  43. In pursuit of industrialization, the Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corporation (PASAR) was incorporated.
  44. The Dictator authorized at least 24 hours as rest day every week.
  45. The Tyrant authorized the National Collegiate Entrance Examinations (NCEE) as a requirement to a college course which necessitates a minimum of four years.
